Adding it to a patio?

Cheapest done at the same time as the patio. Send a photo of the space and we will tell you what fits and what it changes about the base.

What it involves

Decisions that get made before the base goes in.

A fire feature and a seat wall are structural elements sitting on a patio, not furniture placed on top of it. Both need to be planned before the excavation, because both need footing and one needs a gas or electrical run.

Footing

A seat wall and a fire pit both need base under them. [VERIFY FOOTING SPEC.]

Gas or wood

Wall lighting

Lighting set into the course below the cap washes the stone rather than glaring at seated people. [VERIFY FIXTURE AND TRANSFORMER SPEC.]

Questions about fire features

What people ask before they hire.

01

Can a fire pit be built into a new paver patio?

Yes, and it is much cheaper done at the same time. The footing, the base and any gas or electrical run get set during the one excavation. Adding it later means cutting back into a finished patio, lifting pavers that may no longer be available, and paying for a second mobilisation.

02

Can a fire feature or seat wall be added to an existing patio?

[VERIFY RETROFIT CAPABILITY.] The practical constraints are whether there is base under the spot where the wall needs footing, and whether the original paver line is still made — a repair around new work is very visible when the colours are a batch apart.

03

How much does a built-in fire pit or seat wall add to a patio project?

[VERIFY THE ADDED COST OF A FIRE PIT AND OF A SEAT WALL, priced separately.] The variables are the size of the feature, whether it is gas or wood, whether wall lighting is included, and whether it is going into a new patio or an existing one.

04

Wood-burning or gas: which should I choose?

Gas lights instantly, produces no smoke or ash, and can be shut off when you go in. Wood costs less to build, needs no gas line, and is what most people picture. The deciding factor is usually how often it will actually get used — a gas feature gets lit on a Tuesday, a wood one tends to wait for the weekend.

05

How much space should I plan around a fire pit?

[VERIFY THE CLEARANCE ALEJANDRO'S PLANS AROUND A FIRE PIT.] Two things get underestimated: seating needs room to push a chair back, and a walking route behind the seats keeps people from stepping between the fire and someone's knees.

06

Can lighting be integrated into a seat wall?

Yes. Fixtures set into the course below the cap throw light down across the face of the stone rather than out at eye level. It lights the seating area and the wall texture at the same time, and it is the single detail that makes a patio usable after dark. [VERIFY FIXTURE SPEC AND WHETHER ELECTRICAL IS IN-HOUSE.]
